Crucial distinction: In some Cantons (Zurich), the Notary is a Government Official (Amtsnotariat). In others (Bern/Geneva), they are private Lawyers (Freiberufliches Notariat). Prices are fixed by law.

Marriage Contracts: You need a notary to sign a "Prenup" (Ehevertrag). Without one, you are in "Errungenschaftsbeteiligung" (Shared Assets).
