Akonto

On-Account Payment

Simple Definition

A provisional monthly payment made towards estimated variable costs (like heating or water). It is NOT the final price.

Why this matters to Expats.

This is a budgeting trap. You pay CHF 200/month "Akonto". The landlord tracks actual usage. In March, they tally it up. If usage was CHF 2500, you owe an extra CHF 100 instantly ("Nachzahlung"). Always ask if the Akonto is realistic for the building's age.

Actionable Intelligence

Review: You have the legal right to see the original invoices for oil/gas/water.

Adjustment: If you consistently get money back, ask to lower your Akonto. If you pay extra, raise it to avoid shock.
